into the blue - short shorts

ShortShorts.jpg

Those of you who know me, know this to be true: I wear short shorts!  I’m 41 and have strong legs; many likely perceive my short shorts as inappropriate!  For years, I wore short shorts in spite of being self-conscious of cellulite and bigger legs.  I marched on, in my short shorts, determined not to let fear of what others think influence what I wear, what I feel comfortable in- being authentic and self-consciousness is way more desirable than being neither.  I’m happy to report that the fake-it-until-you-make-it approach worked: I no longer give a damn what you think of my daisy-dukes.  I wouldn’t be surprised if my children bury me in my cut-offs.

Enter my 8-year old daughter.  Since she learned to walk, I’ve been dressing Phoebe in short shorts, just like her mama, until earlier this spring, when she broke into the good-will box in the garage, gathered her older brother’s shorts, and stuffed them into her closet, burying all those adorable shorties, never to be seen again.  It turns out, Phoebe’s comfort level is knee-length, and we can only find those in the boys’ section!  Phoebe has since written letters to CEOs asking them to consider unisex clothing, and is in the midst of developing her own brand, Bird, a line of clothes for girls who don’t like short shorts or pink.

In short, may we each find our comfort level in peace.

I start here as I feel like it’s necessary to keep it simple, short, and meaningful.
