into the blue- dear pre-covid self

Can you imagine reading a letter from your future self in January 2020?

Mine would look something like this...

Dear Georgia,

Friday, March 13th will be Pip and Phoebe’s last day of school, and Roo’s last day of commuting to work, for at least 6 months if not a year or more.  You will not be getting on a plane for the foreseeable future.  Your retreats will be cancelled and your vacation plans too.  Although you will be happy to have Roo grounded from his business trips, you will eventually ache to travel and visit family and friends.  You will close your new studio in Hamilton due to it being unsafe to practice in person.  By then, you will be required to wear masks in public, and you will wonder if you’ll ever shake someone’s hand again.

You will lose faith in your government as it exhibits shortsighted leadership and disregard for expertise.   Six months from now, nearly 1MM people will have died from a virus you’ve never heard of and the US will have the greatest number of cases and deaths.  At least 33 countries will ban U.S. travelers come July.

You will experience shame, trauma, and disgust as racial inequalities are horrifically exhibited again and again. You will bear (virtual) witness to humans murdered in cold blood, and others “cancelled” like you would a Netflix subscription.  The chasm between the haves and the have-nots will spread at an unfathomable rate.  You will come to understand this time as a breaking point: when our society’s value of the individual over the common good (and our Earth) has turned toxic.

There will be silver linings too.  There will be so much more time and space to be at home with your family.  Social pressure will be a moot point and doing less will be acceptable.  You will appreciate Sugar and Grit (my dogs) that much more as they remind you: all that matters is right here, right now.  You will connect with friends that live farther away because now a ZOOM dinner is a legit way to spend Saturday night.  You will take teaching online like a bull by the horns.  You will reconnect with old and new students.  You will bring CAKE to a wider audience, and they will like it.  You will re-evaluate how you live your life and how you show up for others.

Brace yourself, you are about to enter a period of great change and uncertainty.  It will not be easy.  You will revert, regress, retreat.  Whatever boundaries you set, all bets are off; it will be up to you to reconfigure a life worth living.  Three pieces of advice to get to the other side: 1) make choices from a place of love and not from a place of fear; 2) be patient and 3) give what you’ve got and take what you need.

Go gentle,
Your future self

Would I be able to comprehend a letter like this?  Here we are six months in.  We are living moment to moment, wondering what’s next, trying hard to keep the fear at bay and staying present without any plans to distract us.  We are hoping and praying for a new normal better than this --one where reparations are made, children go to school in person, ZOOM dinners are a thing we did during COVID, and we value each other as much as ourselves.

As always, thank you for reading.
