into the blue- welcome back, america, and the healing example of garlic

Good morning,

I don't know about you but I was literally overhead fist-pumping listening to Harris and Biden on Saturday night. For the first time in a long time (maybe 4 years?), I felt inspired, hopeful and proud while watching the news. Biden addressed everyone in our nation. He thanked the African American community for standing up for him. He empathized with those who voted for President Trump. He encouraged us to lead by the power of example. He told us to look to our better angels as a means to heal. He referenced God's work. He reminded us that with a full heart, steady hands, faith, love, justice, and each other we can be a nation united again.

These are the values we teach our children. These are words that give us goosebumps. These are truths that make us want to be better, do better, love more, give more, breathe deeper, be of service, fight for what's right, do the right thing. Listening to Biden, my 8 year old daughter said: "Mommy, I didn't know a President could be cheerful, and not grumpy."

And let us take a moment and acknowledge that on Saturday night, there was a WOMAN speaking to us on our televisions: a woman of color, a child of an immigrant, and a mother herself. Thanks to Kamala Harris' bad-ass-ness and Joe Biden's "audacity," my children now believe the highest office in our nation is open to anyone.

I know not everyone is happy with the results of this election. I imagine there is fear, anger, and resentment, but let us now align with our higher allegiances that bring us together as Americans, as humans in the midst of a pandemic. Our central nervous systems need some undoing. We have to get strong again so we can show up for our people, our country, and our world.

I spent yesterday in my garden, putting her to bed, but before I said goodnight, I planted my garlic. Garlic is my absolute favorite food to grow. You start the process by taking a bunch of bulbs from last summer's harvest and separating them into individual cloves. Next, you take each clove and push them directly into the soil on a warm day, like yesterday, in late fall (tips up). The soil should come up just above your second knuckle. I plant my cloves about 8 inches apart in rows 12 inches apart. Come spring, the first green tips to break the soil's surface will be your garlic, which will grow continuously and heartily until they become scapes. In mid-June, you cut the scapes, and enjoy them roasted with salt or in a pesto. In mid-July (or when the stalks begin to brown), you pull the (now) bulbs, and lay them out to dry in a cool, dark space. I'm still enjoying my harvest from July, and will continue to do so well into the winter. Outside, in the cool, dark, and tired soil of 2020, 45 cloves of garlic have been laid to rest. Today I will cover them with salt marsh hay. Then one day, in a few months, while peering out my window, I will notice the green tips popping out of the hay, and I will know spring has arrived, full of hope and revitalized energy.

Let us follow the garlic clove's example. It's time to heal and refuel and grow strong again.

Love to all Americans- together, we will be ok.
