E A R T H
That was fast, January.
I woke up this morning, thinking about how I wanted to share this silly (?) story:
Shortly after Roo and I got married, we were living in NYC and I was reverse-commuting to a job in Westchester (I always opt for the path less travelled even when it's more difficult and doesn't make sense!). I was sipping my Starbucks non-dairy (I was diligently following the advice of a then-famous dermatologist I can no longer remember the name of, that eliminating dairy would certainly clear up newly broken-out skin) latte (which I had gotten a ticket for because I had doubled-parked to get it), listening to WFUV (my favorite independent radio station that serenaded me with songs like Corrine Bailey Rae's Put Your Records On and The Felice Brothers' Frankie's Gun!) when I had, what felt like a life-changing revelation. I instantly called Roo on my uber cool (now vintage) Nokia cell. When he answered, I was overwhelmed with joy- I began to cry (something he was used to those days).
"Roo, do you know what I just realized?"
"No..."
"If you re-write the letters in your last name, or I guess...OUR last name...you can spell EARTH!"
Roo was speechless at this point, likely wondering if his newly betrothed was in fact actually totally overwhelmed by her self-imposed, chaotic, expensive, stressful daily routines. Eventually, he replied,
"Well, I never realized that, but yes, I guess you're right."
"Don't you see how cool and beautiful this is!?"
It was a sign. A gift from the bigger-than-me, telling me, loud and clear, 'you have landed, Georgia, right where you're meant to be.' This revelation was what finally allowed me to say goodbye to my name of origin, Georgia Goodhue, and embrace Georgia Reath. A few months later, I quit my job in Westchester (where I grew up) and started teaching yoga while pursuing my degree in Counseling Psychology at Columbia. The rest is history.
I'm not sure if it was this experience or some unobserved combination of many others like this along the way, but I have developed a true love and connection to words with EA:
Earth (my ground)
Peach (my nickname)
Reath (my love)
Lead (my instinct)
Breathe (my life force)
Heal (my purpose)
Eat (my joy)
Meal (my share)
Reach (my potential)
Each (my connections)
Leap (my faith)
Create (my soul)
Teach (my work)
Speak (my words)
Read (my knowledge)
When EA shows up, my ears perk up, my eyes widen, and I pay attention.
Inspired by this story, I looked up my name: Georgia Goodhue Reath, which translates to Farmer + Good Servant + Daughter of Prosperity and Grace.
Do you have a word or letters that show up again and again in your life? Are we paying attention? What does your name mean?
With love,
Georgia
